Field Twenty-Two Refuge Laja
From the field of Reliance and Trust in Allah the field of Refuge is born.
Allah Most High says, ‘…their souls seemed confined and they understood that there is no fleeing and no refuge except to God.’ 9:118
Refuge is seeking safety and haven in one place.
There are three kinds of refuge:
Refuge of the tongue
Refuge of the heart
Refuge of the soul
Refuge of the tongue, or vocal refuge, lies in apology and seeking forgiveness.
This is so true and clarifying, that we take refuge with our tongue through apology and seeking forgiveness!
Refuge of the heart indicates the heart’s spiritual poverty.
The soul’s taking refuge comes from being made desperate and distressed. Here, distressed (idtirar) means being afflicted with yearning.
Trust in Allah is to consign your actions to Him. Refuge is to entrust your life to Him.
Trust in Allah is to place one’s hope in attaining certain things. Refuge is to place one’s hope in Him alone.
The one who trusts Allah finds peace in Allah’s bounty. The adept in refuge finds peace in Him alone.
If there were no refuge, there would be no reality to one’s seeking.
Refuge is the splendor of the righteous and Allah’s
door-ring that is grasped by the hand of the seekers.
The field of Refuge is for the lovers.
Even the name Laja has a sweet and supple sound, like a sigh of someone falling into the arms of the Beloved, or the breathlessness of the one running to the Beloved.
This station supersedes all others as it is the arrow hitting the center, the ray returning to the sun, the water drop plunging in the ocean at last after its long journey through the earth.
Where else can we truly take refuge but with the Source where we originated?
Nothing else will fulfill us.
Taking refuge is the original religion. It is the natural movement of the heart, like the infant going to the breast and the child running to its mother.
This is the religion without dogma and rules. Who can intervene between a soul and its Beloved Lord?
Intercession happens and must happen, as intercession is the healing of wounds and the discourse of lovers. When a friend prays for ‘intercession’ for their friend, when the Prophets intercede for their communities, when the Prophet Muhammad, saws, will be asked to intercede for all humanity….this is the discourse of love to return the soul to its Origin, its true Refuge.
As we grow from childhood to adulthood the real crisis is that we have nowhere to take refuge. The magic of childhood is in great part because we have the refuge of our parents who even with their normal human imperfections are like god for us. When we become a teenager we feel thrown out into the world, which is a natural growth process taking us into the larger field, but it can be terrifying. We leave the shelter of our family and gravitate toward friends who become like a family, but this is usually a shaky refuge. And so we continue between terror, exaltation, despair and hope…until we find a doorkeeper of the path of return.
What bliss to find the doorkeeper, the door and the path! What bliss to find the companions of return. What bliss to find the love notes of Rahman on the path. What bliss to taste the wine of return in the Zikr with the lovers. What bliss to be free, essentially free of all limited thinking, limited action and limited being.
What bliss to return!
To the sanctified soul, Allah Most High communicates intimately, “My beloved soul who has attained perfect peace and conscious fullness, return now mystically into your Lord. Joining your spiritual delight with My infinite Divine Delight, enter now into the circle of My most exalted lovers, enter now into the Paradise of My very Essence.” 89:27-30
Let this be our essential religion. Let this return be our every moment.
“We take refuge with you O Beloved, O Lord and Lover of our being. We return to You with every breath. And when we forget in one breath may we remember in the next breath. We love you. We love all for Your sake. Our life is a sacrifice of love, transforming the striving of the moments and the days into love. Our life is Yours alone. Please accept us as we are and as we strive to be!”
Our trustworthy guide, the beloved Muhammad, sallallahu aleyhi wa sellim, and all the Prophets, peace be upon them, are the leaders in taking refuge.
Hazreti Ali, may divine pleasure shower upon him and illuminate his countenance, declared, “I have no fear of anything after which I can offer two raqats of prostration.”
No wrong-doing, no limited action, no self-abasement can survive after taking refuge with Rahman. When we take refuge with Allah all illusion disappears, all devils are defeated.
If a suggestion from the Rebel reaches you, seek refuge with Allah, for He is the All Hearing and All Knowing. 7:200
We take refuge with the Lord and Lover of humankind. The affirmation of taking refuge constitutes the last two Surahs of Koran which we recite at night in the Witr salat. Or we can offer them on their own with 3 Surah Ichlas just before sleep.
Affirm with your whole being,
I seek true refuge with the Lord of perpetually dawning Wisdom –
perfect refuge from all the negativity generated by limited conscious beings, with which they darken their consciousness, total refuge from the confusion, magic and obsession they project.”
Affirm with your whole being,
“I seek true refuge with the Lord and Lover of humankind,
the mystic Sovereign of humankind,
the Divine Guide of humankind –
sure refuge from all negativity that whispers divisively
into the pure heart of humanity and into the hearts of conscious beings on the subtle planes of being.”
We take refuge with our Lord and Lover from the whispering of the negative energies which strive to tell us that we are separate from Allah, that we are limited, that we are unworthy, that we are not true (“were we not already truth the truth could not be known” Ansari/Nur), that we have to compare and compete, that we have to store up, that we will not receive what we pray for.
We take refuge in You O Beloved Creator and Lover of our being from all that is untrue and from anything other than You!
I take refuge with You O Beloved,
I take refuge with You O Cherisher
I take refuge with You O Essence of my being.
There is no veil on the path of refuge, and there is no end to its treasure.
May we become ever more conscious of our moments and ever more ardent in taking refuge in the Truth of our being.
